Golf bid starts today

NZPA staff corres. Penina New Zealand bids to break back into the top ranks of world amateur golf on the lush greens of one of Europe’s finest courses, at Penina, in southern Portugal, today. It is the tenth world amateur team championship for the Eisenhower Trophy, and until two years ago in the Dominican Republic, New Zealand had a record of remarkable consistency.. New Zealand teams notched up second, third, fourth (twice), fifth (twice), seventh and tenth placings in the first eight Eisenhower events. They could do no better than fifteenth in La Romana in 1974 and are now striving to get back into the top bracket. Heading the New Zealand comeback is the 39-year-old Ted McDougall (Tokoroa). a veteran of the first championship at. St Andrew’s in 1958 and now competing in the biennial event for the seventh time. And if he maintains the form he has struck in atrocious wet and windy conditions over the last few practice days, New Zealand will

be well on the way to a prominent showing. McDougall has shown flashes of devastating form, particularly when he shot a three-under nine holes in driving rain on Monday, and this has been an inspiration to the team. The other three team members are Geoff Clark (Otago), Peter Burney (Manukau), and Alex Bonnington (Wellsford).
