Cyclists have good practice
Most of the leading contenders for the Rohtmans three-day cycling Tour of Southland had useful warmups to the tour at Mosgiel last week-end. Garrv Bell (Waikato) won the Mosgiel 100 km massed start from Blair Stockwell (Canterbury), Vern Hanaray (Hastings) and Paul Jesson (Canterbury). David Hewson (Canterbury) was the only non-intemational to stay with the others, and this group was 3|min clear of Kevin Basher, Chris Hogan (both Canterbury) and Peter Hoding (Otago).
The next day, Hanaray recorded the fastest time in the Otakou Fisheries 160 km classic, by half a minute from Bell and a minute clear of Jesson. The race was won by the veteran, Ernie Warren, from the 36min mark. A last-minute adjustment,
which meant that his gears [slipped as he left the mark, [cost the Invercargill rider, Mike Hughes, a clear cut I lead when the Rothmans tour gets underway this morning.
Last night, the 38 entries I went through a 4km time itrial around Queens Park to see who leads out on tour wearing the yellow jersey. Hughes, who raced around the circuit in smin 31sec, will share the honour with Jack Swart, of Morrinsville. Leading times were: M. Hughes (Invercargill) and .1. Swart (Morrinsville) smin 31 sec, equal 1: R. Sumich (Auckland) smin 51sec, 3; V. Hanaray (Hastings), G. Matheson (Auckland) 5 min 53sec, equal 5; P. Jesson Canterbury). A. Cuff (Palmerston North) smin Msec, I equal 7; B. Stockwell (Canterbury). G. Bell (Hamilton) 5 min 56sec, equal 9; T. Home (Canterbury) smin 59sec.
