Vandals cut up league ground

Vandals drove cars over Centennial Park in Cobden during the week-end. The matter has been reported to the police. The owner of the ground, the Cobden-Kohi-noor Rugby League Club, has also expressed concern iat damage done to the ground by horses. An inspection of the ground yesterday showed wheelmarks made by at least two cars. The ground was cut into in several places. The club president (Mr F. Jellyman) said yesterday that the club had had two previous experiences of cars causing damage on the club’s two fields.

The damage to No 1 ground had occurred during Saturday night and early Sunday morning. It came when the club was preparing to top-dress it and sow new seed. The rain over the last few days had halted this work. “If it had been fine and the work started, we would now be faced with redoing the surface,” Mr Jellyman said.

“As it is, it will need attention before we can start.”

People also tended to exercise horses, ponies and dogs on the ground, ignorning the fact the park was private property and that they were liable to be prosecuted for t repass.
