Formalities ‘forgotten’
The member of Parliament for the West Coast, Mr Blanchfield) was so pleased to hear that a new administration and staff block at Buller High School was to be built that he released the news immediately at the week-end. The chairman of the school’s board of governors (Mr J. M. Byrne) said the first he had heard of the news was through the media. He said he considered it a discourtesy by Mr Blanchfield to make the announcement without informing the controlling body. Mr Blanchfield said he had been told by the Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) that he could release the news any time, and had done so. As the buildings had often been delayed he had forgotten the formalities, he said.
