East Timor sealed off

NZPA-Reuter Jakarta The Indonesian general commanding the former Portuguese colony of East Timor has said that foreign ships approaching the territory without clearance would be shot and sunk on the spot if deemed necessary, Antara News Agency has reported. Antara quoted BrigadierGeneral A. R. Soehono, commander of the East Indonesia Military Command, as saying that East Timor, which was incorporated into Indonesia last July, has been declared a closed area to visitors.

Visitors wishing to go to the territory should get permission from the Defence Ministry in Jakarta, the agency said. It quoted Brigadier-General Soehono as saying that the step was taken to allow the people in the territory to live in tranquility, and enable them to develop the province.
