Sarkis plan for Lebanon

(NZPA-Reuter Cairo The Lebanese Presidentelect, Mr Elias Sarkis, who will take over as Head-of-: State this week, was reported yesterday to have presented President Sadat of Egypt with a plan for an immediate cease-fire in Lebanon.

The semi-official Cairo daily, “Al Ahram,” quoting sources close to Mr Sarkis, said the plan might be announced today. The 52-year-old Christian banker, who will take office on Thursday, arrived in Cairo on Saturday. He had three hours of talks with President Sadat in Ismailia on Saturday night.

“Al Ahram” said signs of a settlement of the Lebanese crisis were encouraging after the series of talks in Cairo between Egyptian and Lebanese leaders in the last week.

Egypt is the centre of new efforts to bring peace back to Lebanon after 17 months of civil war.

Mr Sarkis came to Cairo in the middle of talks he is having with Palestinian and Syrian leaders in Shtoura, east Lebanon.

He is expected to resume the discussions in Lebanon today.
