Council house rents
Sir, — Councillor Bruce Britten is to be commended for calling for “a detailed list of people who are more than three months overdue in their rental accounts for Christchurch City Council houses.” (“The Press”, September 14). As a ratepayer, I am appalled that the City Council has let rental arrears accumulate to over SIM for the year ended March 31 last. Is this sound administration? Aside from genuine cases of hardship e.g. elderly age and sickness beneficiaries, and solo parents unable to supplement their benefits there must be quite a few “fair dinkum bludgers” occupying council houses here, and, no doubt in other main centres. I wonder, too, how much damage is done to council houses by these defaulters. Can the City Council enlighten us on this point, and on proposed measures to recover the arrears? — Yours, etc.,
H. M. FOSS. September 16, 1976.
