China after Mao

Sir, — I am glad that P. J. Alley admits that democratic centralism is a lot of humbug and whoever has the most'bullets will win in China and become the only true champion of Maoism. That terror is the only weapon to keep uneducated masses in line was well illustrated when a group of carefully selected university chaps went there last year. They saw and heard what they were supposed to. they went where they were led and came back with heaps of praises. None stayed. Strangely enough, communal living in New Zealand is still in limbo. They would have land, complete freedom, no working for the capitalists. Could it be that loss of educational grants, unemployment and family benefits made them change their minds? I bet they would choose it. if the alternative was a long swim down the Yangtse. —Yours, etc.,
