Short week to continue
Canterbury rubber workers will continue to work the four-day week which they began two months ago in protest against a breakdown in wage negotiations. About 500 members of the Rubber Workers’ Union yesterday rejected a letter from employers, which said that they were prepared to resume talks if the restriction on normal work were lifted. Canterbury plants are ; affected by the dispute, 1 which arose after a one-day .protest stoppage on July 19. Employers had been asked Tor a 2.5 per cent wage increase in relativity with other awards, and an increase in penal rates corres-' ponding to the cost-of-livingj allowance.
A “meaningful” proposal would have to include an understanding on the points at issue, an operative date for any agreement, and a joint approach to the In-, dustrial Commision, Mr Morel said.
