‘Support bishop’ campaign

New Zealand Roman Catholic Overseas Aid, like

similar organisations in other countries, is offering support for Bishop Donal Lamont, of Umtali, Rhodesia, who has been arrested by the white minority government on four charges that could bring the death penalty. The bishop says that “two of the charges are for not reporting the presence of ‘terrorists’ at our missions, and two for advising missionaries not to inform on such people.” The 65-year-s>ld_ Irish-born bishop has often spoken out against the Government of Mr lan Smith for its treatment of black people. Catholic Overseas Aid, an agency of the New Zealand Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference, suggests the sending of cablegrams as one means of supporting Bishop Lamont.

“Such cables would not only be a source of personal encouragement to the bishop, but would indicate to the Rhodesian authorities the extent of international support,” the agency states. “Accordingly, the Christchurch Committee of Catholic Overseas Aid has sent such a cable, and asked other groups to do likewise.” Persons or groups who wish to support the bishop in this way are advised to address cablegrams to: Bishop Donal Lamont, P.O. Box 47, Umtali, Rhodesia.
