Two views on staffing issue

The Minister of Health (Mr Gill) apparently regards the dispute over staffing the new psychiatric unit at Princess Margaret Hospital as a local matter, and says he has no intention of intervening. The district secretary of the Public Service Association in Christchurch (Mr J. M. McKenzie) made this comment after a meeting with Mr Gill yesterday. A deputation from the P.S.A and Sunnyside nurses met Mr Gill for a short time

while he was in Christchurch. Mr McKenzie said it was interesting that Mr Gill had considered the dispute a local one, because the North Canterbury Hospital Board had said it was a national matter. Sunnyside nurses will meet the board again today to try to resolve the dispute. The nurses want the unit to be staffed by trained psychiatric nurses, with salaries on a par with those at Sunnyside.
