And there is an interesting l leavening of young representatives of “new" sires, and of • olts and daughters from some • iugh*ciass rare mares. At the fiftieth sale last January. Mr Godfrey Kuter. of South Africa, paid 550.W0 for a colt b’ Alcimedes from Star Belle summertime—Belle Rosai, the} 'd inner of 18 races and champion I three-}ear-old of her year. Star Belle will be represented tn the 1977 catalogue bv a brown »-olt by the deceased champion. Oncidium
i Sanderae. one of the first to establish Oncidium's qualities as a sire—she was one of the top ] three-year-old fillies of her year in Australia—will be represented in the 1977 sale by a brown colt bv Imperialist. Te Parae’s son , of Bold Ruler. Young Ida. one of Oncidium's most distinguished representatives in New Zealand, will make ! her first entry to a sales catalogue as a matron. Her first ' foal was a brown colt by Hermes, and he is to be offered i on account of Mr J H. T. Duncan. who also owns the jumping star, Thun. Mrs Alister William, of Te Parse Stud the vendor of the Oncidium—Bridesmaid colt i bought for a record SlOO.OOO in i 1974 has entered an Imperialist , colt from Bridesmaid for the , 1977 sale. Gold Pulse, the Oncidium colt bought for $109,000 by Tommy Smith on behalf of an Indian
shipping magnate, has not been one of the most distinguished of performers, but any colt from the famous Sunbride family commands the widest interest, and Mrs Williams’s Imperalst colt will come in for close attention at Trentham
Another interesting offering on tile first day is a half-brother by Kazakstaan to the brilliant Tudor Light. Kartika. a New Zealand Cup winner, will have her first sale representative in January—a colt by Imperialist. Peg’s Pride, another notable race mare, will be represented by her first foal, a bay colt by Sovereign Edition. One of the most interesting first day entries with a direct South Island interest is a bay colt by Oncidium from St Rose. This close relation of the great Otago staying mare. Princess Mellay, will be offered on account of Messrs D. C. Gould, of Christchurch, and G. Glazebrook,
of Hawke’s Bay. St Rose, dam of the Oncidium colt, is a half-sister bv the deceased champion Mellay, to Princess Mellay.
A half-brother bv the young Nashla horse Beaufort Sea, to the big winners. Quetta and Inside Story, bred at Inglewood Stud. Kaiapoi. will come up on the first day. So will another Inglewood-bred, a colt by Beaufort Sea from Cosmotrix idam of the Australian winner. Tiber Star).
The departure of Mellay from tlte scene lias taken some “local” character out of South Island entries, but. those breeders without resident stallions have, it seems shopped around profitably.
Sovereign Edition. Battle Waggon. Shlfnal. and Rocky Mountain, are well-proved sires represented by South Islandowned youngsters in the catalogue.
