Generous sponsorship for Banks Peninsula
Generous sponsorships of cash, stallion senices and trophies have enabled the Banks Peninsula Racing Club to. frame an attractive pro-i gramme for the centenary race meting at Motukarara on October 30. Instead of following the l usual trend of making the; event for stayers the main' race on the programme, the, club's committee this year ha<! decided to give a significant boost to the stake for the: main sprint. The principal event on the < ard. the Banks Peninsula’ Centenary Handicap, will be a 1400 metre race, worth $3OOO. for class one. two and, three sprinters and for three ' ear-old winners since August 1 ar time of nomination. The stake will include $350 provided by Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltd The same firm, has also gnen a dress rug valued at $l5O to be presented to the owner of the winner. The New Zealand Racing Authority's contribution to the Centenarv Handicap stake will be $235. Although the stake for the'

provide a trophy valued at $175 for the winning owner who will also have the choice of a free service to either of the West Melton-based stallions, Aristoi or The Monk. The free service has been donated by Mr J. D. Litten, proprietor of Preston Farm Stud. The owner of the winner of the Canterbury and Westland Racing Owners and Trainers’ Handicap, a 1400metre event for class-four ■ horses, will receive a trophy valued at $75, provided by the Owners and Trainers’ Association, and the owner of the winner of the Ellesmere Handicap, for lady riders, will receive a free service to the Riccarton- : based sire, Nip O’ Scotch, j This has been donated by Mr I R. N. Simpson. The rider of the winner of the ladies’ event will receive a $25 trophy donated by Mr G. A. Rawstron and the riders j of the first four horses will be presented with cosmetics donated by Wilfred Owen (N.Z.) Ltd. In addition each lady rider will receive a gift provided by the committee of the club. The event for maiden pacers on the programme will cost the club nothing. The
Canterbury Park Trotting Club will provide $7OO of the $ll5O stake and the balance will be provided by the Racing Authority. The winning owner will receive a $lOO trophy and there will be a $25 trophy for the driver of the winner. Both trophies have been donated by Mr W. G. P. Cunningham, president of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club. A $5O trophy for the trainer of the winner has been donated by Mr C. Gray, the first president of the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club. Special prizes will include cabin bags, donated by Air New Zealand, for each winning trainer and Airwork j (N.Z.) Ltd, will provide a soo I trophy for the leading trainer on the day. The jockeys who ride the winners of the on-course treble races will each receive jan Australian fibreglass riding whip valued at $l7. These have been donated by Freightways Bloodstock Services Ltd. Competitions open to course patrons will include the chance to win return air tickets for two to Wellington, plus $2O spending money, on Wellington Cup Day.
