Marlborough beat Southland, 28-12. in an inter-provincial Radio New Zealand rugb> cham pionship match at Blenheim on Saturday. The powerful Southland pack gave a fine display of scrummaging and Marlborough had difficulty in containing the visiting forwards in the first half. Onlv desperate defence and a lack of finish bx the Southland hacks prevented the visitors from gaining a large lead. Honours were even at half-time, six-all. alter a try b> Brian Ford for Marlborough which was converted bv Kevin Sutherland, and a trv by Lester Rutledge, u hich was converted by Geoff Valli. Marlborough lifted its game in the second spell and tries were scored bv Rar Gordon. Jack Davie and David Neal. Sutherland converted two and kicked » penalty goal. Kevin Hodges d ropped a goal Southland's other points came from another try by Rutledge, converted by Valli. Valli gave a fine display at full-back; he was excellent on defence and dangerous when entering the backline
For Marlborough. Ford. Peter Baker, and the loose forward trio. Neal. Brian Dwyer and Mark Best, were in top form.
