New black belts
Two Canterbury players. Dave Man and Stan Taylor, have been admitted to the select band of black belts in the Canterburyarea at this years national judo championships. Dave Mair of the University Judo Club, was the young men's light heavy-weight and open champion at the Canterbury and South Island championships and third placegetter in both divisions at the nationals last year.
This year he capped his Shodan grading bv coming second In his weight group at the national championships and taking the four main titles at the Canterbury championships. At the moment he is on tour with the New Zealand judo team in New Caledonia. The Canterbury- middle-weight champion. Stan Taylor of the International Judo Club, is the second new black belt. His tenvear ludo career has been marked bv his dogged determination to succeed. Further good news for Canterbury came with the announcement that Graeme Coulson, of Can-Am-Ju. has been upgraded from First Dan (Shodan) to Second Dan iNidani. Graeme who started judo as a junior has. in his senior days, figured In the placings of every major championship since 1969
