New rabies vaccine

NZPA Philadelphia A new vaccine for rabies, one of the oldest and most horrible diseases known to man, has been successfully tested on victims in Iran. The vaccine, developed by researchers at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, is faster-acting and less painful than the traditional treatment developed by Louis Pasteur last century, Dr Hillary Koprowski, director of the institute, said yesterday. He said the new vaccine had been used last year on 45 people hi Iran who had been severely bitten by rabid dogs and wolves. All of them recovered, he added. Dr Koprowski said the| vaccine could be given in a total of six injections. Older vaccines needed as many as 21 injections and often were ineffective. The new vaccine was already in use in Iran, West Germany, France, and Sweden, he said.
