Pay for All Blacks queried

The Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality has written to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) expressing its concern that All Blacks who are Government servants have been granted leave of absence with pay. The CA..R.E. secretary (Mr Tom Newnham) said: “Leave of absence with pay is normally granted only when the overseas sporting tour included at least one international match.

“Since, on the present tour, no matches whatever are being played against representative sides—as all teams are picked on a racial basis—the payments to Government servants will certainly be construed as bending the rules.”

He said he was concerned at reports that the State Services Commission viewed each of the All Black matches against the “Coloureds,” “Bantu” and “Springboks” as international and hence payments to civil servant All Blacks were justified. Mr Newnham said he had asked Mr Muldoon whether this was the view of the Government as it could be construed as an explicit endorsement cf apartheid in sport. ‘
