Seddon Shield to Buller

Buller won the Seddon Shield by beating Marlborough, 14-6, in a rugby match at Blenheim yesterday. Honours were even until the last stages of the game after two penalties had been kicked by Gerald Hart (Buller) and Ray Gordon had dropped a goal. Kevin Sutherland kicked a penalty.

Buller erupted in the last three minutes and its second five-eighths. Brian Morgan, crossed for two fine tries to take the Shield that has been in Marlbourough for the last four seasons.

Marlborough, which started firm favourite, was hard-pressed to contain the lively Buller pack. Calvin Cochrane, at No. 8. was in great form and the flankers, Des Taylor and Alec Fussell, worked hard throughout. Buller’s full-back, Hart, played a first-class game; his strategic kicking and positional play was of the highest order. Marlborough’s loose trio, Brian Dwyer, Mark Best and David Neal, were tireless workers, and the halfback, Peter Baker, in spite of some poor line-out service, was in good form. Brian Hunter, st full-back, was reliable throughout.
