NZP A Sydney; The New Zealand star, Bal-: merino, the early favourite for the Melbourne Cup, will return to New South Wales next week to kick off his spring campaign. He will give an exhibition , gallop between races at Eagle Farm today with his attendant, David Wilson, as the rider. His trainer, Brian Smith, who arrived back in Brisbane this week, said yesterday that he was pleased with Balmerino’s progress. “He has been exercising on the beach at Sandgate (near Brisbanei and has been doing very I well.” he said. ! Smith said Balmerino will iappear in Sydney on his way to Melbourne, but the trainer has . not decided if it will be in a race ior barrier trial.
