Elderly pair die

NZPA Auckland An elderly man and his housekeeper were only a couple of metres from safety when they were overcome by smoke in their Parnell house early yesterday. Firemen, who found their bodies shortly before 5 a.m. and ambulance officers tried unsuccessfully to revive them. They were Frederick Charles Clement Caulder, aged 82, and Elsa Alice Cheeseman, aged 75. Mr Caulder, whose body was found in the kitchen, had evidently been asleep in the lounge. It is believed that the fire .which appeared to have started in a bedroom, had been burning some time before the alarm was given. Twenty firemen from foul appliances took about half an hour to brinfe it under control. The house, in Elam Street, was extensively damaged on one side. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
