Unqualified treatment
The Canterbun - branch of the New Zealand Psychological Society is concerned at reports of inappropriately or completely unqualified people who are providing psychological treatment or assessment. The chairman of the society •Dr R. N. Hughes) said these people often advertised through the personal columns cf newspapers.
They might have a psychology degree which did not include the necessary qualifications for doing applied work, or might have taken psychology with other subjects for a degree. They would not be suitably qualified to provide treatment or assessment.
The public might not be aware of this situation and would therefore be prevented from getting help from a trained psychologist, said Dr Hughes. Dr Hughes said there was at present no registration of psychologists. If there were » register, steps could be taken against the unqualified person.
