Maze protest
Lancashire beef hot pot boiled potatoes, currants, and ;creamed rice flew over the I walls of the Maze Prison in Belfast on Mondav as Provisional Irish Republican Armv and Protestant Ulster Defence Association members joined forces in a protest. Members of the two groups, mortal enemies on the streets of Belfast, threw 673 prison dinners over the gaol wall, iset fire to mattresses, and destroyed insulated food containers. They were believed to be protesting against plans by prison authorities to end special category status for 4‘ooliticgl” prisoners who are allowed special comforts—including the right to receive gifts of food from outside — Belfast.
