Quax still sick

NZPA staff corres. Montreal Dick Quax is making a slower than expected recovery from the illness which on Friday cost him any chance of qualifying for the Olympic 10,000 metres final. The 27-year-old Aucklander suffered a severe bout of the stomach “bug” which had affected several other members of the New Zealand team and had not been able to eat for up to 48 hours before his race. He said after a light jog on Sunday he was feeling much better but after another light run yesterday he was disappointed. “He didn't feel he had improved much on what he was yesterday,” the New Zealand track coach (Mr Arch Jelley) said. “We’re a bit worried about his weight (he has lost 10 lb) and for a runner in the shape Dick is in, that’s serious.” Mr Jelley said it was still too soon to say whether Quax would be properly fit when he lines up for the 5000 metres heats on Thursday morning (N.Z. time).
