Doctors ‘now sure of law’
PA Auckland Doctors could now be very sure what the law was, said Dr James Woolnough, commenting last night on a Court of Appeal decision upholding the dismissal of abortion charges against him. It was quite plain, he said. Doctors would not have to be as afraid as they might have been in the past. There were now three grounds on which abortions could be performed — serious danger to life, danger to physical health, and danger to mental health. "It is up to each doctor to determine, in each case before him, how the view applies.”
I; Dr Woolnough said he believed the Court of Appeal Jdecision made by three ■judges showed a spectrum of feeling. "From a legal point of view, the decision is obviously a landmark, and I am pleased that New Zealand has a fairly positive (ruling at last.” But he felt the judges had had a difficult decision co make. Dr Woolnough said. He saw the case as being more important to New Zealand. Dr Woolnough now plans to become a New Zealander because he likes ; t so much here. He has been working at the Auckland Medical Aid Trust’s Aotea private hospital, and hopes to continue to do so
