Hot favourite
With his Tanzanian arch-rival, Filbert Bayi, out of the running, New Zealand's John Walker is now an odds-on favourite with British bookmakers to take the 1500 metres gold medal. One of Britain’s biggest bookmaking firms, the William Hill organisation, quotes Walker at 4/9,
while Joe Coral lists him at 1/2. His nearest rival in the betting lists, the American Rick Wohlhuter, is at 8/1 or 9/1, followed by the German Thomas Wessinhage at 12/1. Heavy local betting on the Englishman Steve Ovett has put him at 10/1 in Joe Coral’s list. New Zealand's Rod
Dixon retains strong favouritism for the 5000 metres final, being variously quoted at 5/4, 6/4 and 11/8. Dick Quax is third favourite at 6/1, 7/1 or 8/1, in all the Hsu. after England’s Brendan Foster, who is still favourite for the 10,000 metres.
