Winter sledge traverse

PA Scott Base, . —, x. n t An expedition to circum- < navigate the Hut Point j Peninsula of Ross Island. 1 manhauling equipment and {supplies, has been completed ] iby a team of four from Scott ’ Base. ( The traverse of the;) peninsula had never previ-|’ ously been attempted with: laden sledges during this |1

period of the Antarctic winter. In spite of very cold conditions, the 20-mile return journey was completed in 23 hours. The crossing of the peninsula, fraught with crevasse hazards, was made easier and safer by a full imoon and exceptionally clear {weather. : Those taking part were {Messrs M. Wing (Taupo), C. : Davis (Wanganui). C. Mills '.(Auckland), and J. Thomson '(Temuka). According to Mr Davis on {his return to Scott Base, it proved a hard trip, although all members agreed it had been very worth while. Mr Davis’s main problem was when the party stopped hauling and took a rest. The perspiration on his gloves froze and he would rapidly lose the use of his fingers. Servicemen will help prepare the 10,000 ft long skiway and the McMurdo base in readiness for the main influx of arrivals in October, when the summer research season begins.
