Relief for teachers

Sir, — Mr F. Dodd, a member of the national executive of the Educational Institute claims that of 3000 teachers in the Canterbury area there were 577 absentees in March, about 19 per cent of the total. This seems very high, and it would be interesting to compare this percentage, with other sections of the work force. In cne large secondary school, it was claimed that if 12 teachers were away, they would be in a serious situation. What was not explained was that the school would only be four teachers short on any one day, and could employ eight relieving teachers. Mr Dodd would do justice to his organisation if the full facts were explained to parents, not generalisations. — Yours, etc., C. G. MARSHALL. June 17, 1976.
