Proposal to extend shooting season
A proposal to extend the shooting season next year was made by a member of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at its council meeting. The duck population had built up greatly over the last few years, said Mr G. Eddy. The society was spending a lot of its revenue on the use of scare guns to keep ducks off farmers’ crops. As well as the equipment, this represented a sizeable wages bill to the society for the rangers employed. The shooting season this year was five weeks, having been extended to include the Queen’s Birthday holiday. Mr Eddy thought that another three weeks shooting would do much to reduce the duck population and to enhance the society’s standing with shooters. It would also be likely to bring increased revenue from the greater number of licences that might be sought, he said. The cost of a licence was recently increased from $8 to $lO.
The matter has been referred to the game committee for consideration.
