Team bribed to lose
(N.Z.P.A.Reuter— Copwrioht) BRUSSELS.
The Belgian Football Association has announced that it has relegated first division club La Louviere and imposed a life ban on the team’s coach after hearing bribery allegations. The association said it had received complaints from players of the Berchem Club of Antwerp that they had been offered money by La Louviere to lose their match on April 11. La Louviere won 2-1.
The association said that the La Louviere coach, Jef Jurion, had been banned for life, and Eddy Caers, a La Louviere player, had been suspended for one year. Jacques Roelandt, a player with the Berchem first division club, was also suspended for one year. A statement by the association said Jurion had asked Caers and Roelandt to approach Berchem players and ask them to- ensure a La Louviere victory. La Louviere faced possible relegation at the time. La Louviere were ordered to pay the association 20 per cent of last season’s receipts. Jurion said later he would appeal against the ban imnosed on him.
