Geologist to study volcanoes
Professor R. H. Clark, head of the geology department at Victoria University of Wellington will study volcanic activity in Japan for three months. He will’ be a guest of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the University of Hokkaido. From Japan he will go to North America for three months to study the geochemistry of volcanic rocks. Professor Clark said that the prediction of volcanic eruptions was very advanced in Japan, and most destructive eruptions there in the last decade had been predicted. Last year Professor Clark represented New Zealand at a U.N.E.S.C.O. conference on volcanic surveillance. Since 1967 he has led a team monitoring the activity of the White Island volcano in the Bay of Plenty.
