One-eyed ‘World Xl’
(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright r LONDON. The English cricket captain, Tony Greig, has named his “World Eleven” and did not include a single Australian. Writing in the “Sun” newspaper, Greig named the top team of his playing era: (in batting order) Barry Richards, Geoff Boycott, Clive Lloyd, Garfield Sobers (captain), Graeme Pollock, Mike Procter, Alan Knott, John Snow, Andy Roberts, Bishen Bedi, Chandra Sekhar. He ignored the Chappell brothers, Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee, • although the four, along with Rodney Marsh, were given “consolation” places in Greig’s “World second eleven.” In the same article, Greig named Ray Illingworth as the greatest captain of his era, and put lan Chappell a close second. “I don’t think Chappell was a genius on the field, certainly not as tactically brilliant as Illingworth, but his players loved him and he always got the best out of them. “Many Aussie players blossomed under Chappell, and he pulled off some seemingly lost tests and turned them into wins.”
