HAGLEY KEG RACE

A 21-year-old medical student, John French, of the High School Old Boys Squash Club, outclassed all opposition to take fastest time and win for his club the teams event in the annual and highly successful squash players keg race round Hagley Park on Saturday afternoon. His time for the slightly more than four mile course was 22min lOsec. This was about four minutes better than the winning time in last year’s inaugural event. The field of 65, 15 more than last year, was pleasing, considering that so many Canterbury squash players were away competing in Nelson said the convener of the event, Mr Maurice Blank. He emphasised that the

main object was to get squash players’ full participation in running for additional fitness, regardless of their times for the event. In spite of a blustery wind, which made conditions difficult in the first third of the race, all competitors completed the course. Of the eight women runners (three more than last year) the outstanding performance was that of Mrs Pat Boland of the Sumner club. Not only was she first woman home but she raced only a quarter of an hour after completing a strenuous competition netball match for her club Sumner. Her husband, Bob Boland, improved on his time in last years event with a commendable 27 minutes at the age of 43.’ Another husband and wife combination, who coped with the distance in good style was Mr and Mrs Frank Aplin, of the Cashmere club.

Mr Aplin was convener of the recent successful park-to-park communitv jog organised by the Christchurch South Rotary club. Mr Blank, who presented the trophy said the run was effective in promoting stamina training to improve the standard of squash, and to give an indication of early season fitness. He said the success of Saturday’s run indicated it was firmly established as an annual feature of the squash season in Canterbury. Team placings were.—High School Old Boys, 24 points, 1; Wigram, 65. 2; Presidents. 68, 3; Burnside n. 87. 4; Christchurch R.F.C. I, 97,' 5; Sumner 11, 107, 6; Sumner I, 113. 7; Christchurch R.F.C. 111. 156. 8; Cashmere Club, 163, 9; Christchurch R.F.C. I, 10.
