Scots outclass N. Ireland

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright 1 GLASGOW. Scotland followed up their 3-1 defeat of Wales on Thursday by beating- Northern Ireland, 3-0. at sunny Hampden Park on Saturday in their second match in the British Soccer Championship.

The Scots outclassed their rivals and won with goals by Archie Gemmill in the twenty-fourth minute, Don Masson in the forty-seventh, and Kenny Dalglish in the fifty-second. They were also awarded a penalty from which Bruce Rioch failed to score.

The Scottish manager, Willie Ormond, cannot be too happy with his striking force, in spite of their having scored six times in two matches this week. As in the game against Wales, Scotland were the masters throughout today’s match, yet they could not make the ragged Irish defence pay fully in goals. Willie Pettigrew missed two golden chances early in the game and Derek Johnstone, who later replaced him, failed to find the target. The Scots’ great strength was in mid-field. Gemmill, Rioch and Masson dominated every move and Gemmill sent a stream of passes through the Irish defence. In Cardiff, England’s newlook soccer team beat Wales 1-0 on Saturday in their first match in the British Championship series. Manager, Don Revie, looking beyond the championship to England’s first World Cup qualifying tie in Finland in June, experimented with several new young players, partly because of injuries to experienced men. Revie had asked for commitment from his players and, although they worked hard to contain the Welsh in the first half, they made several mistakes in mid-field as they tried to achieve cohesion. Wales had started to a fierce pace under the hot sun, but they began to feel the effects as England gradually grew in confidence and the English emphasised their superiority in the second half.

The goal came in the 57th minute from the winger, Peter Taylor, of the third division club, Crystal Palace, whose only previous appearance in a full international was in the role of substitute. The standing in the British home international soccer tour-
