Thatcher call for election
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON. May 9. A gain of more than 1500 seats in a 15 per cent swing to the Conservatives in local government elections on Friday’ has encouraged Mrs Margaret Thatcher, the Conservatives* leader, to renew her call for an early General Election.
But the jolt to Labour, which has said it believes it! is now winning the fight i against inflation and hoped! the success of its latest pay! agreement would be reflected in the polls, means that an early election is unlikely. The feeling in Westminster is that Mrs Thatcher has not yet justified her early promise in moulding the Tories into a team that could oust Labour. “These are Mrs Thatcher's dog days,” the “Economist” noted, advising her to bide her time, sort out new policies, and find some new stars for her shadow Cabinet.
The “Economist” apparently thinks she should remain “lady-like”—at least at present. “To be observed vainly trying to attract attention when she has little new to offer would be bad both for her morale and her prestige,” it said.
