ENGINEERS UPSET BY FUNDS CUT
The New Zealand Institution of Engineers is disappointed at the announcement of the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) that funds for the work of the Standards Association will be reduced.
The president of the institution, Mr J. Ingram, said: “The work of the Standards Association is directly geared to improving the country’s economy, and prior to the election, the present Government promised that the association’s resources would be strengthened, so that improved services would be available to commerce and industry. Mr Ingram said he realised that cutbacks were necessary, but that they could have been made more judiciouslv. For example, design engineers and architects were desperate for new standards and codes in the building industry to help reduce costs. Reduced funds would also hamper the development of manufactured goods for export, and affect quality standards, he said.
