’Blind eve' on parking
The Christchurch City Council should not seek enforcement action against people who park illegally on Hagley Park’s grass verges on Saturdays, the works and traffic committee said yesterday. Sir Robert Macfarlane said the practice had been going on for years because of the lack of parking areas near major sports grounds. There was no reason for the council to ask the Ministry of Transport to start cracking down now. On Tuesday, the parks and recreation committee started looking for alternative parking sites which would relieve the need to drive on to grass verges. “I would like to see us turn a blind eye to this and ignore the whole thing in the meantime,” said Cr J. F. Burn. Cr Helen Garrett said that such parking was convenient and not dangerous to children. She said it should be allowed to continue. The Ministry of Transport traffic superintendent (Mr A. Goldsmith) said there could not be a wholesale relaxation of enforcement around the park. The law still had to be enforced, especially where cars damaged both the footpaths and grass.
