Bomb hoax charges

(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 26. A Waitara freezing works labourer, convicted on two charges connected with hoax bomb calls to the works, was today sentenced to six months periodic detention and placed on probation for 18 months. Raymond Weco, aged 17, appeared before Mr D. B. Pain, S.M., in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court for sentence on charges of being a party to calls made by another person on March: 31 and April 1. He had pleaded guilty. Fictitious messages were given: “There is a bomb, get everyone out,” and, “There is a bomb in the works, everyone out.” Weco had also admitted stealing a car valued at $950 at Waitara on February 5. Counsel (Mr J. S. Auld) said that Weco was unhappy in his job and felt he was being pushed around by his employer. On each of the three charges Weco was sentenced concurrently to six months periodic detention and placed on probation for 18. months.
