House just slips away
(N.Z. Press Association.) HAMILTON, April 20. The holiday home of a Taupo family for the last 15 years slid into the sea at Ohiwa Spit, near Opotiki, last night after high winds and heavy seas had undermined it during Easter. For the owners. Mr and Mrs N. J. P. Harbidge, it was too sad to watch, and they returned to Taupo yesterday after stripping the three-bedroom house of
everything that could be removed. For the last year they have fought a battle with others to save their houses from the encroaching erosion. Unusually heavy seas and strong winds undid their work in a week. The owners of the 27 remaining houses on the spit will continue to fight for financial assistance to cart old car bodies on to the beach as a barrier against erosion.
