Progress in Timaru
The new Government ] Life building in George Street, Timaru, will be occupied before the end of the year. The main contract is expected to be finished by July. The seven-storey structure, the highest in Timaru, will accommodate several Government departments, probably Customs, Social Welfare, Health, and Inland Revenue. The Inland Revenue Department taking the lion’s share. The Government Life Office, will be on the ground floor.
The immediate problem is the removal by the contractors of the building crane. Soon, the 135 ft, 19ton crane will be dismantled. It is anchored in 60 yards of concrete at the basement of the building, and it reaches through openings in each floor, with its jib and cab above the top floor. The crane, which was erected in
[September, 1974, was designed so that it could be ■ dismantled into two-ton compartments, and then lifted off the building. It will be dismantled from the top and winched from the roof of the new building by a 25ton mobile crane with a 140 ft jib, situated on the street.
