Allegation of rape
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. An 18-year-old woman who thumbed a lift in Onehunga early on Thursday morning was taken to Cornwall Park and allegedly raped. A three-year-old boy and his 20-year-old mother escaped from the car, and halted a passing motorist.
The women decided to hitch-hike home at 1.15 a.m. because the child was cold and distressed. They had earlier tried to get a taxi, but none was available. Two young Polynesian men offered them a lift home, which was accepted. Instead qf being taken home the car was driven to Cornwall Park, where the younger woman was raped. After escaping with her child, the elder woman stopped a motorist and later noted the car leaving the area. Two men, aged 24 and 25, appeared in the Magistrate's Court charged with rape.
