Active worker for farmers dies
Mr Frederick John Henshaw, who died recently in Dunedin at the age of 79 years, played a leading part in Federated Farmers in South Canterbury and on the national scene for many years.
Mr Henshaw, who was born at Cheviot, was only a youngster when his family moved to a farm at Studhplme in South Canterbury. After serving in World War 1 he settled on a property neighbouring his father’s and in 1945 acquired a property at Waihao Downs. ■ In the 1930 s he initially took an interest in the old Farmers’ Union. He served as an executive member, and then as president of the Waimate branch of Federated Farmers in 1949-50 before becoming president of South Canterbury Federated Farmers in 1952, a position which he held for three years. For 18 years he repre-
sented South Canterbury on the Dominion agricultural section council of the federation, and was the chairman of the council from 1954 to 1961. Mr Henshaw was a Waimate delegate to the provincial agricultural section for 27 years, and to the meat and wool section for 15 years. In recognition of his services to the movement he was made a life member of Federated Farmers of New Zealand. Mr Henshaw served on a number of other organisations, including the South Canterbury Electric Power Board, United Wheatgrowers, the Primary Producers’ Co-operative Society, Linseed Growers, Ltd, the Wheat Research Committee, The South Canterbury Pest Destruction Council, and was a past president and patron of the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
