ADDIN GTON MARKET Prime lambs ease in larger yarding

A small entry 7 of young wethers drew the best inquiry at the Addington market yesterday 7 , but prime lambs and prime ewes were easier.

Although the cattle yarding—at fewer than 400—was the smallest for several weeks, values showed only a slight improvement. In common with recent sales, demand was confined largely to local retail buyers. Next week’s prime stock s.-'e at Addington will revert to Tuesday. Prime lambs Prime lambi had an easier sale, although for the size of the yarding it was quite satisfactory. The offering of 1850 head was the largest for three weeks. It included a bigger selection of shorn lambs, but some of the woolly lambs were rather overprime. Generally the market was $1 to 51.20 short of the rates paid last week, when there was a yarding of fewer than 800 head. Values were:— Extra-heavy lambs, to $13.60. Prime heavy, $12.30 to $12.80. Prime sheep A small entry’ of voun? wethers had a very good sale, with value.* fully firm on the good rates paid for a small entry last week. Fwes. however, had a variable sale. The ton selection again bfttered $6 a head, but medium ewes were 50c to 60c easier, and there was very limited demand fnr the plainer end of the yarding. However, it was regarded as a very average sale. The yarding of 378 was the smallest for several weeks, and consisted mainly of lignt to medium-weight steers. Few heavy weight cattle were included. Good quality light to mediumweight steers were $4 to $5 stronger at the best of the sale, and heifers and cows also showed a nominal improvement. Demand was again down mainly from local retail buyers. Steer beef sold mainly at $22 to $24 per 1001 b (48.5 c to 53c a kg) with some sales of good quality light-weights to $26 (57.5 c a kg); heifer beef at $l9 to $2O (42c to 44c a kg), and cow beef at $l6 to $lB (35.5 c to 39.5 c a kg).

Dairy cattle An entry of 12 dairy heifers met a poor sale. The best ol them sold to SI3I, and two others fetched $l2O. Most of the remainder ranged from $65 to $B5. Vealers An entry of 112 vealers had a fair sale for this stage of the season, although in many cases the market was $4 to $5 short of the best rates of last week. The yarding included only a small selection of heavy-weight cattle.

The best of the entry reached $79; good average sold at $6B to $74, with medium at $57 to $65. Calves continued to meet a restricted demand, with the best of them fetching $45. Based on dressed weight, good veal was fetching up to $l9 per 1001 b. Fat pigs A small yarding of fat pigs had a variable sale. Good quality porkers and baconers met firm inquiry, but any pigs inclined to overfatness were heavily discounted. A large entry of choppers had a moderate sale at values $2 to $3 easier. Values were:— Light porkers, to $45. Medium porkers. $45.50 to $49. Heavy porkers and light baconers, $49.75 to $56.50. Medium and heavy baconers, $57.25 to $66. Extra-heavy pigs to $73.25. Choppers to $69.50. Stoce pigs A small yarding of store pigs met a very firm inquiry, and last week’s decline of $2 to $3 was fully recovered. Competition came mainly from local fatteners. Weaners and slips made up the bulk of the entry, and quality was very good. Values were:— Small weaners, to $lB. Good weaners, $18.75 to $24. Slips and small stores, $24.75 to $31.50. Good stores, to $36. Unfinished porkers, to $45.75.
