New flu only in U.S.
(y.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. A new strain of an influenza virus which caused the death earlier this year of a recruit at a United States military camp has not been detected outside the U.S., the World Health Organisation says in a statement.
The W.H.O. says all of its 95 influenza centres throughout the world have been alerted and it has provided laboratory reagents for identifying the new strain. The W.H.O. collaborating centres have issued to research laboratories a strain of the new virus so that they can study its growth characteristics with a view to vaccine production. The W.H.O. says in the statement that the evidence linking the U.S. virus with the one which is thought to have caused the 1918 epidemic is indirect.
But assuming the new strain could trigger off large epidemics, this is the first occasion which a strain has been isolated early enough for vaccines to be mass-produced ahead of time. "Widespread rapid vaccination could greatly reduct? the risk for the rest of' the world,” the W.H.O. says.
