Opposition to logging in State Forests
(N.Z. Presx Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. A Native Forests Action Council meeting on Saturday night opposed any logging in the Waikukupa and Okarito state Forests, because of the threat it posed to the continued existence of the white heron. Logging in this area was not seen as a solution to the long-term problems of timber supply to local sawmills, according to a supplied statement after the meeting. “Furthermore, the meeting decided to continue and intensify its campaign to protect native forests from commercial exploitation, both' State and private,” the statement said. The council will hold its annual meeting at Okarito over Easter.
