N.Z. aid to Afghanistan
The New Zealand Red Cross Society has given $lOOO for medical supplies and drugs for victims of an earthquake and floods in Afghanistan. The earthquake, which was followed by torrential rain, hit the country at the end of March, and left 30 people dead and 75,500 homeless. Food supplies are running out because of the disruption to transport, and water supplies have been contaminated through damaged water mains. Thousands of cattle have drowned.
The appeal for antibiotics, respiratory drugs, and firstaid equipment, came from the International Red Cross this week. New Zealand’s contribution will, with emergency food, be flown to Kabul.
