Car 'rusts in peace’
' | (N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright) [ The 1948 Studebaker, belonging to the late Mona ; Griffiths, has been ceremon-i ,; ially laid to rest, complete - with floral tribute and amid groans from car enthusiasts. The car, one of only nine ■] of its kind left in South . Africa, was buried last week ■I in the municipal dumping ground. Earth-moving equip- ; ment was used to dig the six- ■ foot grave. The car, bearing signs of • wear from its 72,000 miles. ; was pushed in. A bunch of ; wild flowers was thrown on to it and the mechanical ' I shovel covered it over, i; The bank official who of- ■ ficiated at the burial sighed fl with relief. i “Rust in peace,” he mut- ■ tered, and walked away. He had fulfilled the request . in the will of the widow, Mrs Griffiths, who died last : August, that her car be buri ied rather than sold. Another lof her wishes, that her old :grey cat be put down and s I buried in her back yard, has ,; also been carried out. ii Local car lovers have ■ vowed to disinter the Studef i baker, thus risking a 890 fine. They say it is too valuable i to die. t
