The price of bread

Sir, — C. G. Marshall does himself an injustice in condemning those who drink, smoke and attend the’ T.A.B. These iniquitous pur- i suits mentioned are not aj monopoly of the lower in- 1 come group, but the removal : of subsidies is an uncompro- ’ mising attack on the standard of living of this group. In the 1975 Budget provision jwas made for subsidies and everyone was taxed according to income. Today many lof the not-so affluent are iasked to pay beyond their (means for the basic esseni tials of life and have no redress. Come to think of it the only expenditure to come within my budget which Mr Muldoon (bless him) has not increased is the 50 cent double on the T.A.B. — Yours, etc., D. NICOL. April 6, 1976.
