Cat permit idea rejected

. I if’rotn Our Out: Reporter) • Wellington. ; V The Chief City Health N Inspector in Christchurch 1 (Mr A. P. Miilthorpe) has rejected the idea of registering cats as “very un- : :i realistic.” 1 He was commenting on a '.suggestion that all cats 1 should be registered. 1 Mr Miilthorpe said there ' was no legislation on cats at | present so the Government! ' would have to lake the first 1 step and pass a new law. An 1 organisation would then be; 1 needed to enforce the regis- j tration and the cost involved 1 would be “very great.” Mr Miilthorpe said that each time the idea of registering cats had been raised, in Christchurch, it had been i rejected as unrealistic and unreasonable. “Cats are natural prowlers. and are impossible to confine like dogs.” he said. The chairman of the council’s health and general com- ■ mittee (Cr N. Dodge) also rejected the suggestion. “I don’t think it's a ven bright idea.” he said, “and not one that the council 1 would promote.” Cr Dodge said that it was "hard enough getting all dogs ■ registered and would be "impossible” with cats. He doubted if registration would ■ control the numbers cf cats: :;“It hasn’t done so for dogs." .;
