‘More oil power will be needed'
i (A’.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. 1 New Zealand will have to rely more heavily than before on costly oil and gas-. : powered generation installations to supply electricity requirements this winter. The Electricity Depart- 1 mem's Hamilton district: manager (Mr W. J. Shanks) said that despite the high level of storage capacity in Lake Taupo for hydro-electric power generation a lot of oil and gas power generation would be needed to mee the everincreasing demand of electricity. “We’re in a good position,: hydro-wise, only we will still have to use oil and gas; to make up the total needed. “We can’t cope with just' ' the hydro stations. We will ■ need all the oil and gas sta- : tions running throughout the ! winter to cope with the demand.” The lake storage level' [yesterday was at 356.72 [metres — “a very healthy! I position,” Mr Shanks said.. [The level has dropped : slightly since the middle of: February. ! “But this is the tropical ; cyclone season and we exipect heavy rains.”
