Diplomatic posts
Sir, —I agree wholeheart- < edly with the points made in ’ your succinct leader about < the New Zealand High Com- J missioner’s post in' London. - As a result of the unwelcome 1 —to everyone concerned ; with the good name of New 1 Zealand—publicity accorded ‘ ithe “London affair.” the time 1 has surely arrived when ‘ ambassadorial and high j commission appointments ! should cease to become ' political. Ail future such ’ appointments could well be ' made from the ranks of most senior and eminently suitable members of the staffs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Such a scheme would not only ensure that truly knowledgeable men were the appointees, but would give an added inducement to the right types of men — and women —in applying for posts in these all-important Government departments. —■ Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS.
